Kursächsische Postmeilensäule

This 1725 baroque distance marker in Bad Belzig is one of a systematic network of postal milestone columns erected across the Electorate of Saxony on the orders of Elector Frederick Augustus I. The project was surveyed and coordinated by cartographer Adam Friedrich Zürner, making it one of the earliest official geodetic measurement schemes in the German-speaking world. The stone column, decorated with the Saxon electoral coat of arms, once gave travelers and postal drivers precise distance readings along the official post roads. Today it stands as a listed heritage monument at the corner of Bahnhofstraße and Wittenberger Straße, just outside the Burgbräuhaus.
