Little India

Little India is a dense, sensory neighborhood in Singapore's Rochor planning area where the city's Indian, predominantly Tamil community has clustered since the 19th century. Originally a zone of cattle markets and brick kilns, it drew Indian workers whose temples, shops and eateries still define its character. Landmarks include the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple with its vivid gopuram and the candy-colored Tan Teng Niah House, a 1900 Chinese merchant's villa. The two-story Tekka Market offers fishmongers below and street-food stalls upstairs, from dosa to biryani. The atmosphere peaks in November when Serangoon Road lights up for the Deepavali festival.
