Lucus Feroniae

Lucus Feroniae was an ancient Roman-Sabine town with a sanctuary of the harvest goddess Feronia, located about 30 kilometres north of Rome on the Via Tiberina in present-day Lazio near Capena. The sanctuary was a major market and pilgrimage site in antiquity; Hannibal sacked it in 211 BC, and Augustus later re-established it as a Roman colony. Excavations since the 18th century have uncovered remains of the forum, an amphitheatre, the basilica, temples and baths. Today the site is publicly accessible as the Parco Archeologico di Lucus Feroniae, including a museum displaying finds from the neighbouring Villa of the Volusii Saturnini. Lucus Feroniae is protected as an Italian national monument.
