Donato Bramante Cortile del Belvedere, begun in 1505, was one of the most influential architectural projects of the High Renaissance. The massive terraced courtyard linked the Villa Belvedere with the Apostolic Palace and held the papal collection of ancient sculpture - the template for formal courtyards and gardens across Europe.
