Moscow Art Academic Theatre of A. P. Chekhov

The Moscow Art Theatre was founded in 1898 by Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko and revolutionised European theatre. It was here that Stanislavski developed his system of psychological realism, which later shaped acting in Hollywood and at the Actors Studio. The premieres of Anton Chekhov's plays The Seagull (1898), Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard made both theatre and author world famous. The seagull still adorns the curtain as the company's logo. The current building on Kamergersky Lane was remodelled in 1902 by Fyodor Shekhtel in Moscow Art Nouveau. After Soviet-era splits, two successor companies exist today: the Chekhov branch on Kamergersky and the Gorky Theatre. Tickets are available online; the repertoire still alternates Chekhov with contemporary productions, and a backstage tour is occasionally offered.
