Moulin Rouge

The most famous cabaret in the world, opened on 6 October 1889 at the foot of Montmartre on Place Blanche in the Pigalle nightlife district. The red windmill on the roof gave the house its name and quickly became a trademark of the Belle Epoque. The modern cancan took shape here, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted his iconic posters of La Goulue and Jane Avril on the premises, images that still define popular ideas of Parisian nightlife around 1900. The original burned down in 1915 and the rebuilt house opened in 1921. Edith Piaf, Yves Montand and Frank Sinatra all performed here. Two evening shows of the Feerie revue: 60 Doriss Girls, 1,000 feather costumes, snakes, champagne and a cancan finale almost unchanged for over a century. Book well in advance.
