Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome

The Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma, known as MACRO, is Rome's municipal museum of contemporary art in the Nomentano district. It opened in 1999 in the former Peroni brewery on Via Reggio Emilia, a late 19th-century brick industrial building. Between 2007 and 2010 the French architect Odile Decq extended the complex with a striking Red Hall featuring cantilevered steel beams, a black skin and an accessible roof terrace. The collection documents Italian art since the 1960s including Arte Povera, Transavanguardia and new media. Today MACRO hosts rotating exhibitions and experimental projects and is regarded as the most important venue for contemporary art in Rome away from the city's ancient backdrops.
