Norbury Park

Norbury Park sits in a loop of the River Mole between Leatherhead and Dorking in the Surrey Hills, combining a Georgian mansion of 1774 with woodland, meadows and grazing land. The estate already appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The house contains a celebrated Painted Room with illusionistic landscape murals by Thomas Sandby and George Barret that seem to set the viewer in the middle of a wooded Surrey scene; in the mid 19th century the Locke family lived here and were close friends of the writer Fanny Burney. Today the park belongs to Surrey County Council, is listed as Grade II*, and is linked by walking and bridle paths into the North Downs Way.
