San Francisco Veterans Memorial

The San Francisco Veterans Memorial occupies a quiet corner of the city's Civic Center, set between the Herbst Theatre and the War Memorial Opera House, directly across from City Hall. Dedicated in 2014, the memorial takes the form of a stone octagon — a deliberately spare shape designed for contemplation rather than spectacle. Inscribed into the stone is Archibald MacLeish's 1940 poem "The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak", a spare and devastating anti-war verse written during World War II by the poet and former US Librarian of Congress. The memorial offers a rare moment of stillness within one of San Francisco's busiest civic plazas.
