St. Augustin

St. Augustin traces its origins to a Franciscan monastery founded in 1656 by Count Palatine Philipp Wilhelm of the Palatinate, who established it in fulfillment of a personal vow. The complex had a turbulent existence: it was gutted by fire in 1793 and dissolved in 1803 during the Bavarian secularization, which swept away much of the region's monastic life. The surviving baroque church, now a listed monument, continues to serve as a Roman Catholic parish church. Its restrained Franciscan interior — characteristic of 17th-century mendicant architecture — stands in quiet contrast to the grander courtly baroque of nearby Neuburg Palace.
