Iglesia de San Esteban

The Iglesia de San Esteban is the church of the Dominican convent Convento de San Esteban in the historic centre of Salamanca, dedicated to the protomartyr Saint Stephen. Completed around 1610, its plateresque Baroque facade is among the most elaborate in Spain — a dense relief programme covering the entire west front with biblical scenes, saintly medallions, and interlaced ornament carved in warm sandstone. The adjacent convent has a documented connection to Christopher Columbus, who lodged there several times seeking Dominican support for his Atlantic voyage before 1492. Inside, a gilded high altar by José Churriguera from the early 18th century dominates the nave. Designated a Bien de Interés Cultural, the church is open daily and the cloister offers quiet retreat from the surrounding university city bustle.
