St. Nikolai

St. Nikolai near Bauer, a hamlet of the Zemitz municipality close to Lassan, is a 13th-century fieldstone church listed as a protected monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its rough-hewn walls of glacial erratic stone — the characteristic building material of rural Pomerania — have remained largely unplastered, giving the exterior an austere, deeply medieval character. The dedication to Nicholas of Myra is telling: the patron saint of sailors was widely venerated in the coastal fishing communities of Pomerania throughout the Middle Ages. Today the church is part of the evangelical-Lutheran congregation of Lassan, Bauer and Pinnow-Murchin, under the Propstei Demmin. Perched on a low hill east of Wehrland, it commands a quiet view across the Peenestrom estuary toward the Gnitz peninsula — a landscape that has changed little in centuries.
