St Stephen's Church
St Stephen's Church, universally known as 'The Pepper Canister', stands at the top of Mount Street Upper in Dublin — its cylindrical domed spire bearing an unmistakable resemblance to the kitchen condiment that gave it its nickname. Construction began in 1821 under architect John Bowden, who died before the project was finished; Joseph Welland completed the church in 1824. Built as a chapel-of-ease for the parish of St Ann's, it was intended to serve a rapidly expanding Georgian residential district and spare parishioners the walk to the Dawson Street mother church. The neoclassical exterior, with its Ionic columned portico and restrained stonework, remains largely unaltered and still functions as an active Church of Ireland congregation today.
