Zuigan-ji Temple

Zuigan-ji is one of the Tōhoku region's most significant Zen Buddhist temples, belonging to the Rinzai Myōshin-ji school and set in the pine-dotted bay town of Matsushima. Founded in 828 during the Heian period, the current structures were commissioned by feudal lord Date Masamune in the early 17th century and are designated National Treasures of Japan for their exceptional Momoyama-period lacquerwork and gilded carved screens. The approach to the main gate passes through a solemn avenue of ancient cedars flanked by cave cells carved directly into the rock face, once used by monks for meditation and prayer. The temple is open daily with seasonal hours ranging from 8:30 to 17:00, and the cave corridor alone rewards an unhurried visit — especially in early morning when sea mist rolls in from Matsushima Bay.
