Bilderstöckchen

Bilderstöckchen is a northern Cologne district formed in 1969 from parts of Neu-Ehrenfeld, Ossendorf, and Nippes. Its distinctive name derives from a small wayside shrine — a Bilderstöckchen — a type of roadside devotional marker common throughout the Rhineland, typically erected at crossroads or footpaths to protect travellers and commemorate the dead. The OSM record identifies the specific shrine as a historic Christian place of worship, a modest but telling remnant of the folk-religious streetscape that once characterised this part of the city.
