About Alta

Alta lies in northern Norway in the county of Finnmark, close to the 70th parallel, and with around 16,000 inhabitants is one of the region's larger towns. The Altafjord and the valley of the Alta River shape the surrounding landscape. The town is perhaps best known for the Rock Art of Alta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising a significant collection of prehistoric rock carvings. The area also offers natural attractions such as the Alta Canyon, Kovneset, Sakkobadne, and the elevated terrain around Vieksevárri and Stifjell.
