Lahti lies roughly 100 kilometres north of Helsinki in the lake district of southern Finland, with a population of around 122,000 making it one of the country's larger cities. Situated on the shores of Lake Vesijärvi, it has a long tradition in winter sports. The surrounding area offers natural retreats such as the Sammalsillansuon luonnonsuojelualue nature reserve and the recreational spots of Maikinniemi and Tiisunmäki.
