About Samarra

Samarra sits on the eastern bank of the Tigris, roughly 125 kilometres north of Baghdad, and ranks among Iraq's most historically significant cities. It served as the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th century, and its ancient remains — including the palace complex of al-Jawsaq al-Khaqani — are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of around 140,000 people in Salah ad-Din Governorate also hosts the Alrisala mosque and Samarra Railway Station, making it both a pilgrimage destination and a regional transport point.
