Wismar sits on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and has a population of around 44,000. Its medieval old town, characterised by brick Gothic architecture and a grand market square, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Stralsund since 2002. The historic harbour and well-preserved townscape draw visitors from across Germany and beyond. Points of interest in and around the city include the Tridamsberg, the HW-Leasing-Stadion of PSV Wismar, the Tower Flugplatz Wismar, and a commemorative stone marking the site of Burg Mecklenburg, dated 995 AD.
