About Spain

Spain occupies the greater part of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, bordering France, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar, with coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Home to around 47 million people, its capital and largest city is Madrid. The country is divided into 17 autonomous communities, each with its own cultural identity; several, including Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia, have co-official regional languages alongside Spanish. The landscape ranges from high mountain ranges and central plateaus to fertile coastal plains and island territories in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
