Истребитель И-16

A preserved Polikarpov I-16 stands as an outdoor technical monument in Chelyabinsk. Developed in the early 1930s under chief designer Nikolai Polikarpov at Moscow State Aircraft Plant No. 1, the I-16 was the world's first cantilever monoplane fighter to enter mass production with a retractable undercarriage — a genuine engineering milestone of its era. The type saw combat in the Spanish Civil War and formed the backbone of Soviet fighter aviation at the outset of World War II before being superseded by more modern designs. As a static ground exhibit, it offers a tangible encounter with early Soviet aeronautical engineering.
