Axlor cave

Axlor is a prehistoric rock shelter set in a limestone karst formation near Dima, southeast of Bilbao in the Spanish Basque Country. What is visible today as a shallow overhang was once the entrance to a cave now completely buried by sediment. Excavations recovered Mousterian stone tools and faunal remains, and — crucially — skeletal evidence of Neanderthals, making Axlor one of a handful of sites in Spain with confirmed Neanderthal presence. The site holds protected status as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It offers little visitor infrastructure, but draws archaeologists and prehistory enthusiasts for its direct connection to a landscape inhabited more than 40,000 years ago.
