Abtei vom Heiligen Kreuz Herstelle

The Abbey of the Holy Cross stands on a ridge above the Weser valley in Herstelle, a district of Beverungen in the Höxter region of North Rhine-Westphalia, and belongs to the Beuronese Congregation of the Benedictine order. Founded in 1899 and protected as a listed monument, its neo-Romanesque complex is a landmark of the East Westphalian uplands. The abbey gained considerable theological significance through Odo Casel, a Benedictine monk from Maria Laach who served as spiritual director to the sisters from 1922 to 1948. During those years Casel developed his Mysterienlehre — a theology of liturgical mystery that became a cornerstone of the Liturgical Movement and shaped the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Today the community of Benedictine nuns remains active; the abbey church is open for services and the serene hillside setting invites quiet contemplation.
