Eibingen Abbey

Eibingen Abbey is a Benedictine convent perched on a vineyard-covered hill above Rüdesheim in the Rheingau, built in the Romanesque Revival style between 1900 and 1904 and listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002. The monastery traces its origins to a foundation established by Hildegard von Bingen in 1165 — the medieval abbess, mystic, composer, and polymath who was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. After secularization in the early 19th century, the site was refounded by Benedictine sisters in 1904. Today the community of nuns maintains vineyards producing Rheingau Riesling and Spätburgunder, sold alongside herbal products and crafts in the abbey shop. The church houses relics of Hildegard, drawing pilgrims alongside visitors who come for the sweeping views across the Rheingau toward the Rhine.
