Abteikirche Otterberg

The Abteikirche Otterberg is the surviving Romanesque church of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1145, and ranks as the largest church in the Palatinate after Speyer Cathedral. Cistercian building principles — unadorned sandstone masonry, plain round arches, austere vaulting — were applied with unusual consistency, leaving the interior almost free of later stylistic overlays. After the Reformation and the eventual dissolution of the monastery, the building fell into partial ruin before being repurposed as a Simultankirche, one of Germany's rare churches still jointly shared by a Protestant and a Catholic congregation under the same roof. That unusual arrangement, born of post-Reformation pragmatism, continues to this day and gives the church a living ecclesiastical significance beyond its medieval architecture.
