Abbazia di Lucedio

The Abbazia di Lucedio is a former Cistercian abbey founded in 1101, set in the broad rice-growing plains of Piedmont near the Po river and the town of Trino. It ranks among Italy's oldest Cistercian foundations, built in a sober Romanesque style — its cloister, abbey church, and conventual buildings survive in surprisingly coherent form despite centuries of partial abandonment. During the Middle Ages Lucedio was one of the wealthiest monasteries in northern Italy, controlling vast estates across the Po plain and playing a formative role in the region's rice cultivation. Dissolved under Napoleonic suppression in the early 19th century, the complex passed into private hands and gradually fell into disrepair. Today it draws visitors drawn to austere Romanesque stonework and the peculiar stillness of a near-deserted monastic complex adrift in the flat Piedmontese landscape.
