Abu Mena

Abu Mena lies in the Mariut desert west of Alexandria and was one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites of late antiquity, dedicated to the Egyptian martyr Menas, who was executed under Emperor Diocletian. The complex — comprising a martyrium church, a large basilica, and a baptistery flanked by a pilgrim courtyard with sleeping quarters for ritual incubation sleep — drew believers from across the Mediterranean world from the 4th century onward. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, it was among the first Egyptian monuments to receive that status. A modern Coptic monastery keeps the pilgrimage tradition alive, and popular festivals in honor of Saint Menas are held regularly on site. Since 2001, Abu Mena has appeared on UNESCO's endangered heritage list due to rising groundwater undermining its ancient foundations.
