Bkerke

Bkerke is a monastery complex about ten kilometers north of Beirut that serves as the seat of the Maronite Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East — the supreme office of the Maronite Church, Lebanon's largest Christian community. The site functions as the Patriarch's winter residence and operates simultaneously as a religious and political hub: given Lebanon's confessional power-sharing system, the Patriarchate regularly receives heads of state and foreign diplomats here, giving Bkerke an outsized role in national affairs. Visitors encounter a place of contemplative quiet that nonetheless radiates institutional gravity, a centuries-old anchor of Eastern Christianity in the Levant.
