Acozac

Greater Mexico City

Pre-Columbian ruins near Mexico City, once known as Ixtapaluca Viejo, offering a window into ancient Mesoamerican life.

Acozac is a pre-Columbian archaeological site located about 30 kilometres east of Mexico City, near Ixtapaluca in the State of Mexico. For much of its modern history it was known as Ixtapaluca Viejo, only receiving its current name in 1973. Situated along the federal highway between Mexico City and Puebla, the site offers a glimpse into the urban structures of pre-Hispanic settlements on the Mexican plateau. Excavations have uncovered evidence of the dense cultural heritage of the Valley of Mexico region.
