Armazi

Archaeological remains of the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kartli near Mtskheta, Georgia.

Armazi is an archaeological site about 4 kilometres southwest of Mtskheta and 22 kilometres northwest of Tbilisi, Georgia. It was the location of the ancient city of the same name, originally the capital of the early Georgian kingdom of Kartli, also known as Iberia. The city flourished in the early centuries AD and was destroyed during the Arab invasion of the 730s. Excavations have revealed fortifications, palaces and necropolises, offering a rare window into early Georgian statecraft. The site is considered part of the historical Greater Mtskheta area.
