Pyramid of the Magician

The Pyramid of the Magician is the tallest and most architecturally distinctive structure at the ancient Maya city of Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Its oval footprint — nearly unique in Mesoamerican monumental architecture — rises approximately 35 meters above the jungle plateau of the Yucatán Peninsula. Its Spanish name derives from a 16th-century legend claiming the pyramid was raised overnight by a dwarf sorcerer, the so-called Adivino. In reality, archaeologists have identified five successive temples built one atop the other between roughly the 6th and 10th centuries CE, each reflecting different Maya architectural styles. Visitors who climb the steep staircase to the summit are rewarded with an unobstructed view across the entire Uxmal ceremonial complex — particularly dramatic at dusk during the seasonal light-and-sound show.
