Temple of Athena (Priene)

The Temple of Athena at Priene stands on a rocky ledge above the ancient city in western Turkey and is recognized as the first monumental Ionic peripteros — a landmark achievement in Greek sacred architecture. Dedicated to Athena Polias, the city's patron goddess, the temple gained extraordinary historical attention when Alexander the Great reportedly contributed to its construction costs during his campaign through Ionia in the 4th century BC, marking it as a place of both religious and political significance. Five of the original columns remain standing, their slender Ionic proportions still legible against the sky. The site sits high above the ancient Maeander plain, offering expansive views that make clear why the Greeks chose this dramatic vantage point for their principal sanctuary.
