Arrephorion

Reconstructed site on the Athenian Acropolis where priestesses of the goddess Athena once lived and performed rituals.

The Arrephorion was the residence of the Arrephoroi on the Athenian Acropolis — young girls who served the goddess Athena and participated in nocturnal religious rituals. The travel writer Pausanias described the building in the 2nd century AD; archaeological excavations on the northwest edge of the Acropolis uncovered foundation remains identified with it. Though only sparse traces are visible, the Arrephorion offers a compelling glimpse into the religious daily life of ancient Athens.
