The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is one of the world's largest private development organisations, headquartered in Geneva. Founded in 1967 by Imam Shah Karim al-Husayni, the Aga Khan IV, it coordinates a network of agencies operating in around 30 countries, primarily in South and Central Asia and East Africa. The focus spans healthcare, education, economic development and cultural preservation. While working predominantly in Muslim communities, the AKDN serves people regardless of faith, origin or gender. It is particularly recognised for its work preserving Islamic architectural heritage worldwide.
