Agias Sofias metro station

Agias Sofias station opened in 2024 as part of Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and 2, named after the nearby Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia. Its real significance lies underground: during construction workers uncovered a well-preserved stretch of Roman Thessaloniki's Decumanus Maximus — the marble-clad, column-lined main thoroughfare of the ancient city — running along the route of the Via Egnatia some 5.4 metres below street level, complete with flanking shops and houses. The finds are classified as a high-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro and substantially delayed the station's construction. The result is one of Europe's rare transit stops where commuters pass directly over a buried Roman city.
