Ataturk Birth House
The birthplace of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stands at 17 Apostolou Pavlou Street in Thessaloniki, inside a late-Ottoman two-storey house that was part of the city's cosmopolitan fabric when it still belonged to the Ottoman province of Macedonia. Atatürk was born here in 1881, decades before he would go on to found the Republic of Turkey in 1923 and negotiate the Greek-Turkish population exchange that reshaped both nations. The building is administered by the Turkish consulate and houses a permanent exhibition featuring photographs, personal clothing, and artefacts from Atatürk's life. The site carries a quiet diplomatic charge unique in Europe: a Turkish national shrine on Greek soil, listed as a protected cultural monument by the Greek state — making it as much a symbol of entangled histories as of any single nation's memory.
