Aizanoi

Aizanoi is an ancient ruined city in the Phrygian highlands of western Anatolia, set in the Bedir Çayı river valley about 50 kilometres southwest of Kütahya. It stands as one of the best-documented smaller cities of the Roman imperial period, with a remarkably intact Zeus temple from the 2nd century AD — a peripteral structure that ranks among the finest surviving examples in Asia Minor. The site's most unusual feature is a combined theatre-stadium complex, a rare architectural hybrid in the Roman world. Long-running German-Turkish excavations have steadily uncovered the forum, baths, and colonnaded streets, and the site appears on Turkey's UNESCO tentative list. Today visitors move through a largely uncrowded landscape where column drums and carved capitals lie half-buried in meadow grass, offering a contemplative alternative to Anatolia's more heavily touristed classical sites.
