Alabanda

Alabanda was a prosperous city in ancient Caria, a region of southwestern Anatolia now part of Turkey's Aydın province. During the Hellenistic period it flourished as a regional center, known for its Temple of Apollo Isotimos and for a variety of gemstone that ancient writers named after the city — the so-called Alabandian ruby. The surviving ruins, scattered across hilly terrain near the modern village of Doğanyurt, include remains of a Greek-Roman theater, a bouleuterion (council house), and several temple foundations. The site sees little organized tourism, which gives it an unfiltered quality — rubble and column drums lying where they fell, with few signs or fences to mediate between visitor and antiquity.
