Akashi Castle

Akashi Castle was built in 1617 in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, and stands as a representative example of early Edo-period castle architecture. The castle was the seat of the Echizen-Matsudaira, a branch family allied with the Tokugawa shogunate, holding a domain assessed at 60,000 koku — a mid-ranking fief reflecting the site's strategic value between Osaka and Kyoto. Two original corner turrets survive and are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The surrounding castle park is freely accessible to the public and draws visitors each spring during cherry blossom season, while the elevated grounds offer views across the city toward the Akashi Strait.
