Asuka-dera Temple

Asuka-dera, located in Nara Prefecture, is widely regarded as Japan's oldest Buddhist temple, founded in 596 CE under the patronage of the powerful statesman Soga no Umako during the reign of Emperor Sushun. Its establishment marks a pivotal moment in Japanese history — the formal adoption of Buddhism as a state religion during the Asuka period, when the region around present-day Nara served as the imperial capital. The temple houses the Asuka Daibutsu, a large bronze Buddha image cast in the early 7th century and among the oldest surviving Buddha sculptures in Japan, remarkably still occupying its original site despite centuries of fires and earthquakes. The original layout featured three pagodas arranged around a central golden hall, a design blueprint that influenced virtually every major temple complex that followed. Today the grounds are modest and quiet, well off the main tourist trail, making it one of the most historically significant yet unhurried sites in the Kansai region.
