Al Bastakiya
Al Bastakiya is Dubai's oldest surviving historic district, a protected neighborhood hugging the western bank of Dubai Creek. It was founded in the late 19th century by Persian merchants from the Bastak region, lured to Dubai by Sheikh Maktoum's offer of tax exemptions. The quarter's signature feature is its wind towers — barjeel — which funneled prevailing breezes down into the rooms below, serving as the air conditioning of their day. The Al Fahidi Fort, built around 1787 and the oldest standing structure in Dubai, anchors the district and houses the Dubai Museum. Today, the restored mud-brick buildings are home to art galleries and small courtyard cafés, offering a rare counterpoint to the glass towers visible just across the creek.
