Александър Стамболийски 1879-1923

This public artwork in Burgas commemorates Aleksandar Stambolijski, the agrarian Prime Minister of Bulgaria who governed from 1919 until his assassination in June 1923. Leading the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, Stambolijski pursued some of the most radical land reform policies in interwar southeastern Europe, which ultimately contributed to the coup in which he was killed. The monument marks one of the defining — and contested — figures of early 20th-century Bulgarian political history.
