Aquae Calidae

Aquae Calidae is an ancient thermal site within the modern city limits of Burgas, named after the hot mineral springs that have flowed here for millennia. Known in the Middle Ages as Therma and Thermopolis, it ranks among the longest continuously used bathing sites in Thrace. Its historical significance is reflected in the procession of rulers who visited: Philip II of Macedon, Byzantine emperors Justinian I and Constantine IV, Bulgarian ruler Tervel, and Ottoman sultans all made use of its waters. Partial remains of the Roman bath complex survive on site, illustrating successive layers of construction across antiquity and the medieval period. The springs remain active today in the Banevo district of Burgas, where archaeological remnants from multiple eras sit in close proximity.
