The Alexander Column is the centrepiece of Palace Square in St. Petersburg and the world's tallest freestanding granite column monument. Erected in 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon, it is named after Tsar Alexander I. The 600-tonne granite monolith stands without any foundation, held in place solely by its own weight. The angel atop the column is said to bear the facial features of Alexander I.
