Alışar Höyük

Alışar Höyük is an 18-hectare settlement mound in eastern central Anatolia, situated in the valley of the Kanak Suyu river between Sorgun and Sarıkaya in Yozgat province. The tell consists of a citadel and a lower city delimited by a substantial ancient city wall, reflecting continuous occupation from the Chalcolithic through the Hittite period. Archaeologist Robert C. Gorny proposed identifying the site with the Hittite cult city of Ankuwa, a sanctuary of the goddess Kattaha mentioned in cuneiform records, though the equation remains contested among scholars. For visitors with an interest in Bronze Age archaeology, the mound offers a rare, unenclosed look at the topography of an ancient Anatolian urban settlement, though on-site infrastructure is minimal.
