Altıntepe

Altıntepe — Turkish for 'Golden Hill' — is a fortified Urartian royal residence in the Anatolian highlands near Erzincan, representing the westernmost known city of the Urartian Empire. The site dates to the second half of the 8th through the 7th century BCE and encompasses a tower temple, well-preserved burial chambers, and the remains of a palatial complex. Discovered in 1938 and excavated from 1959 onward, the hill yielded remarkable bronze vessels and fragments of wall paintings that offer a rare window into Urartian court culture at its westernmost reach. Occupation at the site spans from the Early Bronze Age through the medieval period, giving the mound a stratigraphic depth that makes it significant well beyond Urartian studies alone.
