Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala — Old Uppsala — is one of Scandinavia's most significant prehistoric sites, dominated by three massive royal burial mounds dating to the 5th and 6th centuries. In pre-Christian Scandinavia it was the religious heartland of the Svear people; medieval chronicler Adam of Bremen described a grand temple here housing idols of Odin, Thor, and Freyr, with nine-year sacrificial festivals at which men and animals were killed and hung from the trees of a sacred grove. When Christianity took hold around 1100, a Romanesque brick parish church was raised directly over the old pagan sanctuary — the building still stands, its nave layered over centuries of ritual memory. The burial mounds are freely accessible and offer a wide panoramic sweep across the Uppsala plain; a small on-site museum presents the archaeological finds and cult history of the area.
