Werl Pilgrimage Churches

The old pilgrimage church of Mariä Heimsuchung in Werl is a listed baroque-influenced church building dating from 1861, standing directly adjacent to the larger Wallfahrtsbasilika in the town's historic center. Werl has been one of Westphalia's most significant Marian pilgrimage sites since the Middle Ages, and this older church once served as the focal point of that tradition before being architecturally eclipsed by its neighbor. It remains of interest to visitors drawn to 19th-century sacred architecture and the deep-rooted Catholic pilgrimage culture of the Soest region.
