Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù

The Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù is a Venetian baroque building erected between 1663 and 1691 on Platía Dimarchíou in the heart of Corfu Town. From 1720 it served as a theatre, and after 1733 it became the nucleus of Greek opera's development — making it arguably the birthplace of modern Greek operatic tradition, a role it held for nearly 170 years until 1903. The building is one of the finest surviving examples of Venetian civic architecture in Greece, listed as a protected cultural monument. Today part of the structure houses the municipal administration, while its pale limestone baroque facade continues to anchor the atmosphere of Corfu Town's central square.
