Municipal Theatre of Corfu

The Municipal Theatre of Corfu operated from 1902 to 1943 as the most important opera house in Greece and is considered the first theatre of Southeast Europe. It succeeded the Venetian-era Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù, which was repurposed as Corfu's town hall. Over its 41-year run it hosted major Balkan companies and positioned the Ionian island as a genuine node in the European opera circuit. On 14 September 1943, the building was completely destroyed in a German Luftwaffe bombing raid, making it one of the most significant cultural losses in Greece during World War II. No structure remains today; the site is marked only by archive records and a small memorial plaque in central Corfu Town.
